Yes, I’m nerdy.
I freely, and of my own accord read a book about the English language, linguistics, history, and the evolution of language. Here’s a small tidbit that made me smile.
“Language, never forget, is more fashion than science, and matters of usage, spelling and pronunciation tend to wanter around like hemlines.”
The Mother Tongue: English and How it Got That Way by Bill Bryson
Actually, that sounds like an interesting book. I think it will make a good Christmas present for Bob. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
I enjoyed it! Glad it gave you a gift idea and I promise I won’t tell Dr. Vern. 🙂
That is a great quote, although those hemline changes annoy me. I see so many “your” instead of “you’re” latey. It kills me a little. I’m reading A Walk in the Woods by the same author. I highly recommend it. I saw that he also wrote The Mother Tongue, now I must put it on my list!
